In a world where everybody hurts, what happens when one boy doesn’t?

It’s 1986 and the only thing that interests eleven-year old Max Hatlan are sharks and the movie Jaws.  That is until his older sister Scarlett is hit by a train and killed.

His parents are vague about what happened, and only refer to it as “the accident,” but Max knows they’re hiding something.  When he finds out it was caught on tape, he gains a new obsession: find the tape and watch it.

He succeeds.

The next morning he’s found floating face down in a public swimming pool, naked and barely alive, and having lost all ability to feel physical pain.

The doctors are stumped, his parents distraught, but Max just wants an explanation for what he saw in pixelized black and white as his sister took her last steps on earth.

Her last breath.

And that thing she did, just before impact, that simply made no sense.
